After the American Revolution, the first organized government in the United States was under the articles of confederation. Basically, the North was based on city life while the South focused on the plantation system. All of this was basically a different interpretation of the United States Constitution on both sides.
As a result, the South preferred not to accept most improvements that were made by the federal government, such as roads and canals, in order to keep taxes low. There were many reasons why the North was able to overcome the South.
